Sustaining hope in Gaza with puppetry

“Camp Theater” is a street theater troupe in Gaza that is delivering therapeutic, educational, and social performances using puppetry. It was established in 2023 as a community response by a group of artists brought together by the idea of reaching all segments of society, wherever they are located.

Objectives

  • Provide initial emergency interventions to alleviate the psychological effects on displaced children in camps and displacement centres.

  • Present behavior modification models, embodied by the heroes of the play, to adjust aggressive behaviours acquired by children due to war-induced disorders.

  • Alleviate the psychological and physiological consequences of war on children’s well-being.

  • Instil hope for a brighter future and foster happiness in children.

Targets

  • Direct Audience: Children aged 6-15 years

  • Indirect Audience: Parents of the children

  • 30% of the performances (15 shows) to be executed within shelters managed by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).

  • 50% of the performances (25 shows) to take place in informal displacement camps.

  • 20% of the performances (10 shows) will occur in organized displacement camps overseen by international or local institutions.
